  • Pasta in the military

Chapter 15 “The Ration” of military manual FM 21-100 Basic Field Manual / Soldier’s Handbook from July 23, 1941 by the U. S. War Department has no mention of pasta or macaroni. The manual discusses different types of field rations, including perishable and nonperishable foods. The nonperishable items include canned products and the manual specifically mentions meat, vegetables, crackers, sugar, coffee and chocolate.

There are many anecdotes of soldiers and Marines eating pasta products during field operations. It only makes sense that pasta would be a main staple while on a military campaign. Does anyone know of the first mention of pasta or macaroni in U.S. military manuals?
